G.T.U

Objective

The Prime Objective of the university shall be to create centers and institutes of excellence in basis and applied science engineering and technology in particular. The Objectives of the University shall be to develop the knowledge of science, engineering technology management and environment for the advancement of quality of life of the mankind in general and in relation to the domain of engineering and technological development and applications.

To Create institutes and centre of excellence for imparting sate of the art education, training and research in the fields of Science, engineering , technology and management in general.

Evaluation System

The evaluation system consists of a component of internal evaluation by 30% as well as final semester-end examination by 70% of total marks.

The internal component consists 30 marks based on 20 marks of mid-sem exam and 10 marks to be awarded based by instructor on the basis of assignment, seminars, quizzes, attendance and practical work.

After adding both marks of internal and external, total marks will be converted into a letter grade as per the following Table A.

Marks Range Grade Grade Points
85-100 AA 10
75-84 AB 9
65-74 BB 8
55-64 BC 7
45-54 CC 6
40-44 CD 5
35-39 DD 4
Less then 35 FF 0

Semester performance index (SPI)

The performance of a student during semester is indicated in the grade card by SPI

Cumulative performance index (CPI)

It is calculated by the same formula as above but sums being over all the courses taken in the current semester as well as preceding semester. In calculating the CPI, any fail grade which the student might have earned but has subsequently passed will be replaced by the passing grade in that subject. Class and distinction will be awarded on the degree on the basis of CPI.

This calculation can be understood by the following example. Suppose a student scoring following marks in first semester.

Subject Marks Grade Grade Points Gi Credit Ci
Maths-I 85 AA 10 5
Physics 75 AB 9 5
MOS 70 BB 8 5
EME 77 AB 9 6
CPU 65 BB 8 6
CS 75 AB 9 3

Therefore, SPI = (10x5 + 9x5 + 8x5 + 9x6 + 8x6 + 9x3) / (5+5+5+6+6+3) = 8.8.

Calculation of CPI

Now the same student is scoring following marks in second semester.

Subject Marks Grade Grade Points Gi Credit Ci
Maths-II 80 AA 9 5
EG 70 BB 8 6
ECE 75 AB 9 6
EEE 78 AB 9 6
ES 80 AB 9 3
W/S 88 AA 10 4

Therefore CPI = (10x5 + 9x5 + 8x5 + 9x6 + 8x6 + 9x3 + 9x5 + 8x6 + 9x6 + 9x6 +9x3 + 10x4 ) / (5+5+5+6+6+3+5+6+6+6+3+4).

Rules of Examination pattern and backlog

The examination scheme according to Gujarat Technological University for 3 different types of subjects is as follows.

Subject with practical = External Exam + Mid Exam + Internal.
Marks = 70 + 20 + 10 = 100 total.

Subjects without practical = External + Mid Exam.
Marks = 70 + 30 = 100 total.

Subject with only practical (internal) e.g. = 100 marks.

a) All the students have to appear for mid semester exam, which is of 20 marks. Students have to score minimum 8 marks out of it.
b) Only those students who are failed or absent due to medical leave must have to appear for re-medial test. The result of this re-medial test will be considered as passing (8 marks) if the student clears this exam without considering his/her real score.
c) 10 marks will be given from practical, assignment, or quiz.
d) External written paper will be of 70 marks.
e) If a student fails in either mid or internal, he/she is eligible to appear for external paper. But his/her result will be considered as backlog.
f) Maximum 4 numbers of backlogs are allowed per semester otherwise the student will be considered as detained. The detained student has to clear the respective backlog of particular subject in next up-coming same semester.
g) The student having cumulative more that 4 backlogs then also he will be considered detained.
h) The students having 4 or less than 4 backlogs have to appear for block exam and must have to clear the exam.
i) The students who are interested in re-checking of their paper (external/mid/internal) can get the benefit of worth Rs. 100 per subject. In this case only re-checking is possible not re-assessment.
